We're back!!!
Ask most Jamaicans or any "Jamerican" (Americans that declare themselves honorary Jamaicans) about Jamaica and they are bound to "big up dem chest" and proudly declare this adventurous island to be the lovliest, friendliest, most "Irie" (happy) place on earth! Ask most travel professionals and they will probably agree. Jamaica, which lies just 90 miles off the coast of Cuba, has long been regarded as one of the most successful island destinations by travelers and travel professionals alike. This distinction is likely due the diversity of it's activities (or lack thereof) and the ability to appeal to all types of travelers; affluent, budget, active or not. Simply stated, there is something for everyone!
If you travel around this 4,411 sq. mile island, the first thing you will notice is how the landscape differs so dramatically from one parish to the next. During a visit in the summer of 2001, my husband Mark and I were fortunate enough to have a little extra time off so we decided to travel to Jamaica for 2 weeks during the summer of 2001. This is my trip report.
Jamaica, gained it's independence from Britain in 1962. But it is a virtual melting pot of African, British, Asian, German, Spanish, Indian and American influences, making it the perfect vacation destination for travelers of all nations. We truly felt as though we had visited 5 islands by the time we made our loop and marveled at this fact on a constant basis. There were times when we didn't feel as though we were actually on an island at all, with the mountains being so high and the valleys just as wide.more...
